Public views sought on 19km tram system for Melaka

The transport ministry is ready to help the private company behind the project to develop the new transport system, says minister Loke Siew Fook.

A private company has proposed to construct a 19km-long tramway system for Melaka, using five-car trams carrying up to 280 passengers. (Metro Trem pic)

PETALING JAYA: The Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) is carrying out a public consultation for views on a proposed 19km-long tram system in Melaka to be built by a private company, transport minister Loke Siew Fook said today.

He said the consultation was an important step to take before approval of the tramway scheme is granted, Bernama reported.

NEW INVESTMENTS AT KAMPONG JAWA

Recently, there is a few new investments in the Kampung Jawa area. 

The 100 year old Kampung Jawa market is being redeveloped by POH Brothers in May 2023 when the old shops were demolished. 

Seems the POH Brothers want to build a hotel and other commercial buildings.

Shop houses along Jalan Kee Ann  have been bought over and being refurbished.

PARK AT KAMPUNG JAWA AND WALK TO HERITAGE ZONES

During No Car Zones every Saturday from 6.00 pm to 12 midnight,

car owners can park at Kampung Jawa.

Walking distance to heritage areas are less than 400 to 660m as seen from the photos below.

REDEVELOPMENT OF KAMPUNG JAWA HAS BEGUN

The redevelopment of 100 years old Kampung Jawa has begun. 

The single storey shops are being torn down. 

It seems the developer,  Poh Brothers want to build a hotel and other amenities here.
