BUNGA RAYA IN THE PAST

Revisiting 1965: The Bustling Days of Jalan Bunga Raya, Malacca ✨

Can you imagine a water buffalo standing right in the middle of Malacca’s busiest street back in the 1960s? 🐃

Look at the nostalgic vintage signs and advertisements on the left—555 Cigarettes, Sanyo, Esso Gas, and Bata shoes—instantly evoking the atmosphere of a bygone era. 📺 ⛽ 👟

What is truly poignant is that, back then, every single shop was open for business, and the streets were alive with the hum of the crowd—a stark contrast to today, where most storefronts have long since pulled down their shutters and fallen silent. 🏬 🔒

The hand-carved Chinese characters on the shop pillars remain clearly visible. 🖌️

And that old utility pole, towering high as if conversing with the sky... having weathered the changes of over half a century, it still stands proudly in its original spot, bearing witness to the passage of time. 🗺️

CHARITY HUB

Hi everyone! I am Shermin . I write mandarin ok right?

Hi everyone! I’m Shermin.

My main goal is to do something related to education.

This library also serves as a welcoming space for children from underprivileged families. If their home environments are noisy or lack internet access for research, they are welcome to come here to study, read, and spend time after school without having to spend money. For students from low-income backgrounds who are willing to help look after the library, I offer a small stipend so they can earn their own pocket money and become self-reliant.

On the ground floor, we provide tables and chairs where seniors can rest and read newspapers or magazines. Anyone wishing to eat before using the library facilities must do so downstairs; food is not permitted upstairs.

There is no immediate pressure to recruit a large number of students or volunteers; the aim is simply to connect with the right people and offer them a helping hand.

HISTORY OF KAMPUNG JAWA

Kampung Jawa, Melaka: A Story of History, Challenge, and Transformation

Kampung Jawa in Melaka holds a long and layered history, beginning as a settlement for the Javanese community during the height of the Malacca Sultanate. It was later redeveloped in the 1880s, making it one of the earliest planned housing projects in Melaka.

Today, Kampung Jawa is known not just for its history, but also for the challenges it faces and the transformation it is undergoing.

🏠 From a Javanese Settlement to a Heritage Precinct

The history of Kampung Jawa is closely tied to the trade links between the Malay Archipelago and Java since the Sultanate era. The Javanese were renowned as sailors, shipbuilders, and even mercenaries, and many settled here. After its redevelopment in the 1880s, the area became a bustling hub for both businesses and residences.

⚖️ Modern-Day Challenges

Kampung Jawa now faces several significant challenges:

· Development and Relocation:

In 2023, its legendary century-old business district was forced to close to make way for new development projects. Business owners who had inherited their trades across generations had to find new locations.

· Heritage Zone Status: As part of the buffer zone of the Melaka UNESCO World Heritage City, the area is subject to strict development regulations. This has kept land values low and limited investment, turning it into what some call a 'greyfield'—an underutilized area.

· Threat of Gentrification: While old buildings are protected and slowly being renovated (gentrified), this process sparks debate about the best way to regenerate the area without erasing its original identity and character.

📍 Experiences and Attractions in Kampung Jawa

Despite the changes, Kampung Jawa remains a fascinating place to explore:

· Kampung Jawa Bridge (Jambatan Hantu): This beautiful pedestrian bridge spans the Melaka River. Its eerie nickname—known locally as Jambatan Hantu (Ghost Bridge) or in Chinese as 鬼门关 ('Gate of Hell')—dates back to the Japanese occupation. Today, it's a popular spot for riverside views and is surrounded by lively cafes in the evening.

· Nearby Attractions: You can easily visit other landmarks like A'Famosa Water Park (5 km away), Melaka Zoo (6.3 km), and Klebang Beach (4.5 km).

· Unique Accommodation: There are boutique stays like Knocknock Home along Jalan Jawa, offering a chance to experience living in this historic neighbourhood.

🔮 The Future of Kampung Jawa

The future of Kampung Jawa lies at the intersection of heritage preservation and the need for modern development. Academic studies have proposed design solutions to regenerate this buffer zone, focusing on:

· Creating a stronger 'sense of place'.

· Optimising land use.

· Ensuring compatibility with surrounding areas.

· Protecting the area's unique identity and image.

In conclusion, Kampung Jawa is a microcosm of Melaka itself. It is a place where history, community, development, and preservation challenges all converge, giving it a rich soul and a story that continues to unfold.

WORK TOGETHER TO REVITALIZE KAMPUNG JAWA

As long as a leader is chosen and everyone works together—securing some funding from wholesalers and local councilors, along with sponsorships from public-spirited individuals—it will certainly work.
